Layers don't show the base layers
Ok, after much poking around I think I resolved this. It wasn't about the feedback master but your answer still put me on the right track. It has to do with the background properties of the layer. When I checked them, I was able to set the background to "no fill" which seems to have worked. I selected to apply this no fill to all slides and will see how it turns out as I complete the project.

Yes, it's possible that a given layer has a solid or semi-transparent background fill even if the associated layout doesn't.
So, for future reference, I suggest checking the background properties of the Feedback Master Layout first, because that will be used for all new layers. If that's the not the problem, check the background properties of the problem layer. (You could also try reapplying the no-background-fill layout to the layer.)
