Learner record voice and save for playback later

I am developing three foreign language courses right now and one of the stipulations is that the learner be able to record their speaking the language and play it back--maybe against a prerecorded version by a native speaker. At this point, we don't have to have a graded assessment--just a self-assessment.

We have to have the courses playable on a variety of browsers as well as mobile devices--so javascript code is not really an option.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying convince my team that Storyline is the way to go.

  • Hi Doug,

You're welcome to share any of your contact info here - just know that it's a public forum. 😀

You can also always use the "contact me" button on a ELH users' profile to reach out to them directly!

  • My suggestion is maybe see if you could do it throw your LMS.  Micro build your course and then have that as an activity, then the LMS do the functions you wanted. Then continue to the next part of your storylines.

Or push an activity inside the storyline and run a pop up with url to a social or dropbox location so they could save the file and reply using that functionality.  Then when they have completed, then simply move along your SL project.

Does that make sense?  I've got lots of ideas how to do this.  Drop me a line and let's explore, this would be awesome to figure out with you. My number is 403.650.4722.  (Sorry support is i'm not allowed to put number in, if i'm allowed great.)

    Cheers,
    Doug

  • Hi Rina!

Gayla may no longer be subscribed to this post, so if you don't hear back from her, you can always contact her directly through her ELH Profile. In the mean time, I wanted to point you to this similar thread--a few tools are suggested there!

Alyssa, thanks for the link to the other thread.

  • Hi Gayla,

Were you able to find a solution that allowed a learner to record their voice?

  • Hi Gayla,

There really is no built-in option for recording an external user's voice for a course. It would be a great feature, no doubt, but it's not currently an option.

The only thing that comes to mind is to insert a Web Object of a site that allows users to record their voice. However, I'm not sure that would work for you, especially if you need playback within the course itself. If that's the case, you could design a page that has this functionality and have the learner interact with that page through the course. Again, though, the audio itself will not be in the Storyline-created project, but the page itself.

The bonus of recording through another source is that most of those services will enable you to access, review, or share the recordings.

Again, not sure if these will work for you - but I thought I'd chime in. Curious to see what others have used for this in their projects as well!

    Best of luck :)
