Lost all my work because Save didn't Save.

I'm really irritated with Articulate Storyline because the Save command didn't save the project I'm on.

There is a glitch in Articulate Storyline that, if you save as the same file name as an older version of your work, it will NOT override your old file.

I published what I was working on, but the source file I created is still a day prior. The published file shows today's date, but the source file is yesterday's.

I'm pretty damn sure that I clicked save like a million times to make sure I'd not lose my current work. But SL for some reason doesn't like to override same named files. I highly recommend you change the file name so you can avoid this problem in the future.

Simply adding a letter at the end of your file should correct this issue. Like, storyline a, storyline b, etc. That way you don't have to recreate everything you just did.

Irritating.

  • Have you had a look at your recent files? Also, were you saving to a server? If so, it's possible your file is gone forever. The two cardinal rules of Storyline are 1) save locally, and 2) Ctrl + S, Ctrl + S, Ctrl + S. (Never trust the autosave, on any app other than cloud apps). Good luck.

  • Hi Julia!

I'm so sorry you lost the file! There might still be a working version in your temp files.

    Here are the steps:

    1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

    2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

    3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

    4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

    Please keep us updated!

Lauren, my file crashed today and I was in panic mode. I opened my file and none of my updates were saved. However, your suggestion was my saving grace! So, thank you so much!

  • I'm so glad that this older conversation was able to help you, Oscar. I appreciate you popping in to share.

      Hi Hemathri!

I'm so sorry to hear you've lost recent changes made to your Storyline course!

A helpful first step would be checking for a working version stored in your temp files. My teammate Lauren shared the steps on that here.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!
