Pausing and resuming timeline for different layers not working the same across slides

Hello!

I need help! I have several different slides that need the ability to pause the timeline when a user clicks on a new layer, then have it resume the timeline of the base layer when they close it. I got it to work fine on my first slide, then on the second slide in the attached file, I can't get it to work as simply with just a single variable.

So I tried added more triggers to get them to work, and now some work and some freeze completely when the user clicks on them. Li

An example, if someone click on the NICU Nurse icon or the Labor nurse it works, but if they select the Postpartum Nurse it freezes everything. I have all the triggers set up the same for every layer, so not sure why it's only working for some.

I am also unclear, why a single trigger to pause timelime on the slide works for the first slide, but I had to set up three additional triggers to get the same functionality on my second slide.

I'm sure someone with much more experience can easily see where I have erred. Would someone mind taking a look at my slides and let me know what I am doing wrong?

Any help is much appreciated!

In Gratitude,

Lea

  • Hi lea,

Like Rachel said, you don't need a trigger to pause the timeline of the base layer when you show a different layer. You can automatically pause the timeline of the base layer using the layer properties of whatever other layers are showing. On all of your layers that are not the base layer, adjust the layer properties to pause the timeline of the base layer.

I looked at your course and made some simplifications and reattached your file here:

    • Changed the layer properties to pause the timeline of the base layer
    • Removed the triggers to start/pause the timeline of the base layer
    • Removed the triggers to hide the layers when their timeline ends (it is confusing for the learner if there's a close button and the layer closes automatically when it's done)
    • Removed the triggers to change the states to Visited because "visited" is a built-in state in Storyline that occurs automatically once the learner clicks the button

This should fix your issues, but if you're still wondering why your postpartum nurse and lactation consultant button froze everything, it had to do with the trigger order. When you have a trigger to "resume timeline" on a layer, followed immediately by a trigger to "pause timeline" on a slide, you're pausing the entire timeline.

  • Hi  Gracelyn!

You actually don't need any triggers to pause the base layer when you open a layer. There's a built-in setting in the layer properties that does this for you. To set that up:

    1. Select a layer.
    2. Select the gear icon in the lower-right corner of the Slide Layers area.
    3. Make sure "Pause timeline of base layer" is checked.
    4. Repeat this step for all layers.

I would try this first and let it work its magic and see if you still run into problems. Once you set this up, you should remove all the pause/resume timeline triggers.

Here's the setting in the layer properties:

Oh my gosh, I knew it had to be simple and that I didn't need all these triggers. Thank you so much!

Thank you for updating my SL file. So helpful! I knew it needed to be simpler and that I shouldn't have to have all those triggers. Thank you so much!
