Performance Tasks - Practicing Conversations in Self-Directed Learning
I'm tasked with creating a self-directed course for our new hire sales people. Right now the training is presented live and a key component is practicing sales calls with the instructor and receiving verbal feedback from the instructor and other learners.
I have some ideas how we could recreate this in self-directed learning, but I am wondering if anyone has done this before and how you structured it? I shared some of my ideas below, but would love to hear how others have done this. Thanks!
Some of my ideas include:
- The learner listens to pre-recorded audio of staged sales calls, so they are listening as a third party. Then they answer questions about the scenario and receive feedback on their answers.
- The "customer" could be an AI bot, like a chat bot, that the learner interacts with to practice their sales skills.
- Two learners in the course could be paired up to role play sales calls, recording this session for an instructor to review, and/or having the partner provide feedback based on a rubric.

Our LMS has an OTJ feature that we've considered using in this manner. I came across a vendor at the last DevLearn conference I attended - Rehearsal. Loved their concept, which is basically akin to virtual coaching through video.
Also, I think that it might be a combination of your 1st/3rd. Learner listens/watches pre-recorded content, then records themselves responding to the scenarios. They upload their recordings and then receive feedback/coaching from someone on what they did right/ what they could improve.

I was pretty impressed by Rehearsal when I saw it, too.
Of course, it's an entire software app dedicated to coaching.
We've just been thinking about how to design a way to do that for ourselves, as well.
I'll be interested in what you come up with. Share or demo your progress or deliverable (or some form of it.)
