Hi Philip,
Although I'm trained in designing instruction, I wasn't trained in graphic design. What helped me was participating in the weekly Articulate challenges, which I did regularly for several years. (I still do when I have time.)
Looking at the work of others, and attempting to come up with my own ideas every week, was incredibly helpful for me. I tend to learn more from doing than from taking courses, ironically. :)
