Placeholder content switching when moving between layouts

Hi folks,

Similar to a previous discussion raised here but I haven't found the resolution... https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/content-switching-placeholders-when-moving-between-layouts

I have created a template with placeholders on a number of layouts.

When testing the template, I found that the content and text in the placeholders in the initial layout, switches when you apply a different layout.

Further layouts selected maintain the switched order - even going back to the initial layout, it holds the switched order.

I set up a test file with text and content placeholders to demonstrate issue and have attached a screenshot of how the placeholders switched around.

Does anyone know if this has been resolved?

Thanks :)

  • Hi Stephanie,

Sorry to hear that you ran into this behavior. The bugs in the thread that you shared have already been fixed in previous releases of Storyline 360 so I'd like to take a closer look at your project file to check what's happening. Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case for testing? We'll delete it when we're done!

I didn't know this had been resolved.  This has been occurring for me on an ongoing basis and is still occurring in my current projects.  I would like to find a resolution as the switching around of text is very annoying.

  • Same issue here. For master slides on questions, Storyline seems to randomly allocate text into different placeholders every time I apply a layout, even if it is a duplicate of the previous slide master. The question is where the options should be, and vice-versa. Is this a bug? Is there a workaround?

      Hi JamesWalkerReid!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with Master Slides in Storyline!

It would be helpful if we could see a screen recording of the behavior you described, as well as a copy of the .story file that's giving you trouble. Do you mind sharing those items here in the discussion or privately through a support case?

We'll delete them from our system as soon as troubleshooting is complete!

I've worked it out thanks StevenBenassi . Hope this helps JamesWalkerReid

It's to do with the order the Placeholders sit in the Timeline, not the order in which they were created, or the name they are automatically assigned.

When you insert text box placeholders, they are automatically named Text Box 1, Text Box 2 etc. in the order they are created, but that does not necessarily mean that is the order they move around between layouts in your project - unless you are consistent in the order you set up all your placeholders.

TIP 1 - Set up your Slide Master by creating placeholders as needed, and arranging the placeholder text boxes in a logical order in the Timeline. Eg Drag your Title Slide Text Box to the top, followed by Sub Heading, Main Text, and Minor Text Boxes etc. Do this for each slide to ensure text boxes appear in the correct order when you switch layouts.

TIP 2 - Change the automatically assigned names of the placeholders in your Slide Master. While these don't carry across to your project, they do save in your Slide Master, making it easy to go back to see your intention for that Text Box.
