Publishing Storyline blocks for Rise360?

Greetings all,

I am new to using Storyline blocks in Rise 360, and I'm feeling quite confused. I'm hoping someone can help; thank you in advance.

Here is my situation: I've inherited a Rise 360 course that uses Storyline blocks for interactions, including quiz questions sourced from a question bank.

I have been able to edit the Storyline source files without any issues, but I'm confused about how to reinsert these updates back into Rise 360. From what I understand, I need to publish the changes to Review 360 first. However, each time I try to do this, only a single question is published, as viewed in Review 360 or when I am in the Rise 360 block edit mode. Strangely, it's always the same question, and I have no idea why it's being selected.

For context, the Storyline project I'm working with consists of 6 sessions and a question bank. Each session includes between 4-8 questions.

When I select the Publish option, there are no apparent settings for selecting specific content, so I assumed that the entire project would be published.

What am I doing wrong? So far, I have not found any guidance online. I found this article, but it does not cover any details that I need for a larger project.

I would appreciate any insights or troubleshooting tips you can offer!

Thanks so much!

  • You're only publishing 1 slide (3.20).

In the Publish window, click that to access the setting to publish the entire course.

  • It is usually not the default, but if that is the last setting used in this Story it will retain that behavior.

A new project, should have the default as "Entire Project"

  • ShawnConnelly-d : I don't understand what you mean by "each question in Storyline is intended to be stand-alone."

Based on the StoryView image, it appears that the question slides are all linked within each scene.

However, it looks like the scenes aren't connected. How is someone supposed to get from the questions in one scene to the questions in another scene?

    • If you want the user to go through the entire Storyline project (i.e., all 6 scenes) via one SL block in Rise, then you need to give users a way to access every scene.
    • Otherwise, you could to publish each scene to Review separately, and insert each one as a separate SL block in Rise.

    I suggest this:

    1. Publish the revised Storyline project to Review 360 as a new item (that is, don't replace the current version).
    2. Before proceeding, step through the course in Review to ensure it works as expected. (FYI: Any SL block in Rise should "play" the entire course just as it plays in Review.)
    3. In Rise, delete the current SL block.
    4. Insert a new SL block that accesses the newly published item.

BTW, you should be able to edit an SL block to use either the latest update of the current project or any other new project. But, sometimes, it's just best to start from scratch. 😊

      Hello Judy,

      Thank you for your reply.

Each of the Storyline Blocks / Quiz Questions are placed in between Rise 360 Blocks. For example, there is a short lesson segment followed by a Storyline Block quiz question, this repeats throughout each of the 6 lessons.

In other words, the quiz questions are not connected.

I erroneously thought that I could publish the whole Storyline "package" and like a library, I could pick each individual quiz block to insert into Rise 360. Knowing that I need to publish each of the 48 quiz questions separately disappointed me. I do not understand why the vendor did not create the quiz questions directly in Rise 360.

      Thanks

Okay. Now I understand: the questions are all interspersed with other Rise blocks.

Yes, publishing (and keeping track of) 48 separate questions would be a major pain. The only reason I can think of for putting the questions into SL blocks is to force the learner to answer each question correctly before they can proceed (which requires specific settings).

I suggest transferring the questions into Knowledge Check blocks. With those, you can provide feedback about the correct answer. Yes, the learner will be able to continue even if they answer incorrectly. IMHO, that's an acceptable trade-off to get the benefit of having easy-to-update questions.

  • Oh... now I feel silly! LOL

I wonder why that was the default?

    Thank you so much! :)

The default when you create a new Storyline project is to publish the entire project.

Publishing just part of a project is usually done for quicker publishing and easier troubleshooting.

When you publish a project, the file shows the most recent settings that were used. That prevents you from having to change them from the default every time. So it appears that someone published only that slide before you got the file.

Bottom line: When you inherit someone else's file, it's worth the effort to double check the settings. 🙂

  • Thank you everyone for your comments.

I think I am still missing an important component before I am able to successfully update all the Storyline Blocks (quiz questions).

    Despite selecting "Entire project"

And watching the publishing... it appears to be publishing more than just a single slide...

Inside the Rise 360 course, when I select one of the quiz blocks...

I only see a single quiz question... just like in Review 360.

Thank goodness for the new (beta) Snapshot feature so that I could, at least, restore the old question.

BTW, the Storyline source contains 6 sessions of many quiz questions each. Only the first quiz question of session 1 is showing up.

Can anyone clue me in on what I am doing wrong?

    Thank you. :)

Note: I am using the latest version of Storyline.

  • I have done some further reading of articles somewhat related to my issue... since each question in Storyline is intended to be stand-alone, it appears that I must publish each quiz question to Review 360 independently.

This cannot be true! Please tell me there is a better way because that will be a ridiculous amount of effort.
