Random white shape on correct/incorrect layers

That extra shape is probably on the Master Feedback Layout. You get there by going to the VIEW tab, and selecting Feedback Master.
Note: You image does look like there's a semi-transparent shape covering most (but not quite all) of the slide. Be aware that the Feedback layouts sometimes use a semi-transparent background. That achieve the same effect of slightly dimming the base.
- If the semi-transparent background is on the Master Feedback, that dimming will also happen on all layers you add, because those use the "Blank" Feedback layout.
- Go to the Background Styles to adjust that as needed.
