Well, I attempted the invisible field (shape at 98% transparency) and covered a portion of the slider. Unfortunately the cursor did not lose contact with the thumb. I also attempted to overlay a hotspot to see if that would work, but no success. Overall, this will probably be easier to just swap out for something like triggered icons.
