RISE - Resume where user left off, but for a public accessible course which does not require login
I have been a Storyline user for several years, and have begun my first RISE project. We selected RISE because the user audience is mostly accessing the course via a mobile device.
Since this course is a public distribution to Pharmacists from a URL link, we did not see the need to distribute through an LMS. There is no scoring or tracking needed, and we do not know who the Pharmacist are (there is no list of them by name/email). So we can not enroll them in an LMS. In StoryLine we can export to the web, make the link available. And each time an individual starts and progresses in a course, when they leave and come back they are taken to where they left off. But as I have just tried, and read in the forums, RISE does not allow for that functionality on a web export, only when using an LMS. Is there a work around to get this feature? And why is the RISE functionality different than StoryLine?
I have sold the client on RISE, and made the assumption the "resume" feature functions like StoryLine. So I am in a bit of a sticky situation here and need to come up with a solution quickly.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Neither Storyline nor Rise can resume where someone left off when a course is distributed on a website. Without an LMS/LRS, there's no place for the software to store the data needed to resume a course.
Since no scoring/tracking is needed, I suggest you use unrestricted navigation. That will let folks access whatever they want whenever they need it.

Hi Judy,
Thanks for your support on this. My apologies I may not have fully explained my clients requirements well enough. There is no need for grading or tracking the users' progress, but each user has to see section of the course, in order, without jumping forward, to finally get to the link to get their certificate of completion. So using unrestricted navigation will not be an option. Good suggestion though.
I do get a different result than you might have with Storyline with the "resume" function. If I create a Storyline course, publish for the web, run the course either from my local hard drive or a generic web server, and then return to the course after running it once, it does prompt me on whether I want to resume where I left off or replay from the beginning. That same behavior does not happen if I run a RISE course locally or off a generic web server. I believe when using Storyline it store the "resume" data in the browser's cache/history in some way.

In my experience, the resume function sometimes works and sometimes doesn't for a web course. I think it depends on the browser and its settings. In short, it's not something I'd rely on.

Rise needs an LMS to resume. Storyline uses cookies on web output for resume not the most reliable method but does work.
