SCORM Data To LMS

Hi All! Thanks in advance for any help provided putting this puzzle together, we appreciate it over here.

We've had a Storyline exam module (SCORM 2004 3rd Ed) on our LMS since July. It has 100 multiple choice questions, and is utilizing the Submit All option, meaning all of that SCORM data is sent to our LMS until the end of the exam. We are not running near the 64,000 character limit on this data.

Since July, all SCORM data was being sent to our LMS until the AWS outage last month. I note the AWS outage because we ran into a week of problems publishing to SCORM with Storyline at that time (same as many of us did), although I don't know that it's related to this issue.

About 6 weeks ago, we had 3 students complete this exam and we received no SCORM data in the LMS. However, all 3 students had intermittent network connections that caused consistent issues with Modules being marked as completed in the LMS and only receiving partial SCORM data (no Submit All in place) during the prerequisite instructional course. So we could not eliminate the browser session being broken being the root cause for any of this group.

Last week, a student that did not have a single browser session issue during 25 instructional Modules, completed the exam and we did not receive any SCORM data and the Module was not marked as complete (as expected, based on SCORM data that we didn't get). I replicated the problem on my hardwired connection, and confirmed that neither the student, nor I, disconnected during the exam by way of our online proctoring recording (which flags all network disconnects).

We've had many students complete exams with fewer questions (20 - 50 each) and we are seeing all the SCORM data for them. It's only this particular 100-question exam that is not getting to us, which started at some point in the last 6 weeks. I tried republishing and replacing the SCORM file, but got the same result. We also have a 100-question exam published from Adobe Captivate to SCORM 2004 3rd Ed that is sending all SCORM data properly since May, and that has not changed in the last 6 weeks, so I'm focusing on the Storyline variable of the equation.

Our developers are reviewing LMS code around the exam, but we haven't made any changes since initially rolling out our LMS in May. I'm looking for any and all information or theories on the root cause(s) to pursue on the Storyline side of it.

You say: "...in the last 6 weeks[.] I tried republishing and replacing the SCORM file, but got the same result." We have had minimal impact during this same time period but I have observed a great many comments here in the ELHeroes about impacts from the different SL versions released during the past couple of months.

Have you tried reverting to the version of SL that was used when the material was initially published?

I'm not a SCORM expert (heaven forbid!) but I believe it would be reasonable to conclude that the failures you are now seeing could be the result of different values/data buried deep in the SCORM package that have been introduced by later versions of SL. So reinstalling an earlier version could be a fruitful effort. Just a thought.

Had not thought about the Storyline versions as a variable, thank you!

To completely eliminate the LMS as a possible source, have you tested your exam on SCORM Cloud?

What is the inactivity time-out on your LMS set to?

Have you tried running your exam with LMS Debug Mode enabled? What do you see?

If you run a packet sniffer like Wireshark, Fiddler, or Charles Proxy, do you see a point where the connection is dropped?

Thank you for the thorough response. SCORM Cloud has not provided us much utility over the years. Timeout is not an issue, as we have dealt with that with a previous LMS so we knew to address it with our proprietary one. And I have not tried running it in Debug Mode, but I will be learning about it and the packet sniffers listed, as I'm completely unfamiliar with their purposes. I appreciate the help on the LMS side!
