Slide Masters Always a Problem

For the life of me, I can not get the concept of slide masters. I just can't. I sat through two tutorials about using 360 templates (great) and creating themes (also great). Feeling ready and excite...

Thank you for your response, Luciana. I understand that the focus order can only be changed on the slide. However, I need to make that "Rectangle" object on the master slide inaccessible but  I cannot see the "rectangle" on the slide master to make it inaccessible. That is the problem. It doesn't show up on any timeline, so I cannot right-click it to change it to "inaccessible" in the size and position option as direct. 

Please advise.
