SSML Tag Errors
I would check out this link. In short, several of the tags aren't supported in Storyline. Even on some of the articles they have written, they don't fully explain HOW to use the tags. One of the tables on their website, doesn't even show that you need to close the tags for it to convert.

UPDATE: my issue was with the <p>, not the SSML code. It has been resolved.

What was the issue you had with the <p>? I'm having the same problem :(
I wasn't closing the statement. The way I tried it: <p>my statement.
To make it work I needed to close it out: <p>my statement</P>
