States for a group?

I'm trying to make the initial state of a group "hidden". However, when I click on states with the group selected, it's greyed out. I only seem to be able to do this by applying the ...
You cannot, but you can build a group within a state and set the that to hidden.
ungroup, cut everything except one object, edit state on that object and then paste the objects into it
