Storyline: Annoying "Notes" Behaviour

Hi all,

The Notes portion of the Storyline UI is behaving in an annoying way and has done so for the last month or so.

I have deliberately not posted on the forums about it as I wanted to give a chance in case it was already on the radar or it might be adjusted/fixed with an update. It has not, hence this post.

The issue: When clicking into the Notes pane beneath a slide, if there is already text in it that is long enough to require a vertical scroll bar to show, the panel will jump around. If I scroll to the portion of text I want, and click to move the cursor to the desired location, the panel will jump. Repeated clicking results in sporadic jumping to, what appears to my eyes, random places. Or the Notes pane is trying to jump to the halfway point between the scroll bar location and the point I want to move the cursor to.

I have to keep clicking in and out of the Notes pane until it decides to let me locate the cursor where I need it without jumping to a completely different location within the text. Using keyboard controls to do this will take even longer to do.

I currently have no fix for this, but it is making it very difficult and irritating to amend the text in the Notes pane for any slides.

Occurrence: So far this has been happening at least for 1 month. It also not dependent on project file. This behaviour has occurred in new and clean project files (where no assets were copied over from another file) and existing files.

Troubleshoot:

  • Restarted my computer.
  • Cold boot: shut-down, power cable removed for at least 1 minute. Powered on.
  • All the latest updates have been installed.
  • Storyline is up-to-date.
  • Only thing I have not done is an uninstall as I would rather use this as an absolute last resort due to the possible need to involve the IT team and project timelines.

If anyone has encountered this problem and managed to resolve it, let me know.

Kind regards,

Sam

<UPDATE: In addition to the described issue, I have noticed when I click to move the cursor, Storyline is highlighting a bunch of text (not always within the paragraphs/sentence I've clicked).>

  • Hi SamBarnard-98a4!

I'm sorry to hear that Storylines' Notes panel is behaving so erratically for you!

Thank you for sharing the troubleshooting steps you've tried so far. I haven't seen other users reporting this issue, and when testing on my end, I was unable to replicate the same behavior. In this screen recording, I've included enough language within the Notes panel to require scroll bars. However, when editing my slide, then returning to the Notes, I did not observe any jumpiness when making edits.

Typically, latency and erratic behavior can be introduced when authoring .story files that are stored on a network drive. Can you please confirm you are working with files stored on your local hard drive? If you are already working locally, I suggest performing a repair of your Storyline installation to see if that corrects the issue.

Let me know how it goes!
