Storyline audio randomly stops working

When playing slides via the timeline, audio will sometimes continue to advance but won't produce sound. Most often this happens when I've paused the timeline to make notes/edits. When I hit play in the bottom-left of the timeline to continue reviewing, the slide will continue with no sound.

When this problem occurs, the sound will sometimes come back after I try playing at different points in the timeline--but again, not according to any pattern or logic I can figure out; it doesn't seem related to, for instance, where on the timeline I move to, or how long I wait before hitting play. Sometimes the sound comes back after a few attempts at changing where I am in the timeline, and sometimes it doesn't, and I have to save, close out of Storyline, and reopen, which usually temporarily fixes the audio. I've tried with and without Bluetooth headphones with no difference in results.

Once the timeline audio stops working, the Audio Editor's sound will also be disabled; whatever causes the timeline audio issue also appears to impact the Audio Editor.

As far as I can tell, this problem does not impact published projects.

As my work involves a lot of reviewing large projects and requires tons of stop-and-start movement through the timeline, this is a problem that wastes a lot of time.

Does anyone have a fix and/or explanation for what's causing this issue?

  • Hi Liam34!

Thanks for walking me through what you’re seeing! Since the published output isn’t affected and the Audio Editor also loses sound when this happens, this looks related to playback in the authoring environment rather than the slide content itself.

Here are a few quick things to try:

    • Update Storyline 360.
      • Go to Help > About Storyline and confirm you’re on the latest build.
    • Run a repair.
      • Open the Articulate 360 desktop app and repair Storyline.
    • Test in a new file.
      • Import one of the affected slides into a brand-new .story file and see if the behavior continues.

If this is still happening after those steps, please open a support case to share your .story file with our Support Engineers!
