Storyline audio stops working on random slides
I’ve been working with Storyline for some time, but this time I’ve encountered an issue where I’m unable to identify any clear cause or logic behind what’s happening.
I currently have four modules published from Storyline, both for SCORM and Review. During the review process, one of my colleagues commented that a particular slide did not have audio. However, when I checked, the audio was present on the slide timeline and played correctly on my end in both Review and Preview. Another co-worker of mine also confirmed that the audio worked for her. 🙃
I then published the module to SCORM and uploaded it to Moodle. While conducting final testing, I noticed that a few slides are experiencing the same issue. The audio does not play when the slide starts. To make the audio work, I either need to:
- go back to the previous slide and return to the slide, or
- let the slide timeline finish (in restricted mode), then drag the timeline back to the beginning, at which point the audio starts playing.
I would prefer not to create a trigger on every slide to play the audio, as the audio should automatically play when the slide timeline starts. Additionally, most of the slides are working correctly, and only a few slides are affected, which makes it difficult to determine the cause.
if anyone has encountered similar issues and have some suggestions or tips on how to fix this. I would greatly appreciate the help!!!

Let's start with the standard questions. Where are you storing your files. If they are not on your hard drive strange things can happen. If they are I would create a case with Articulate. You might want to try and copy all the slide to a new file with a blank template. This might remove something behind the scenes you are not seeing.

We have the files on OneDrive. Since reading your comment, I have moved it to my local drive and republished. While reviewing yesterday, I encountered two slides with the same audio issues. I just go back to previous slide and come back the slide and the audio plays then. Not sure what is happening.

I'm experiencing the same issue. I've tried everything I can think of so I've opened a ticket.

Unless something has broken recently in Storyline (and there are definitely more posts with similar themes). The main reason for this happening is you are trying to bypass the storyline play button is this what you are doing?

Hi Phil, Not sure what you mean by bypass the storyline play button. I am going through my slide by clicking on the next button. The audio on the timeline should play automatic as its on timeline and there is no trigger based on the audio. Here is my timeline and published player buttons.

I have had a similar issue when I try and review a slide in slide view. The play head will just stop at a random point, and I need to click on the play button to get it to restart. I just move on. What I am interested in is PhilMayor comment. Trying to bypass the storyline play button. Am I doing something wrong, all my audio start when the slide open. I don't use any triggers to start the audio when the slide opens. I do use pause audio and resume audio triggers. I have never used a start audio trigger.

Same here - I never used a start a audio trigger. Only I have used when there is interactive component or so. So a information slide, once I place the audio on the timeline, the audio should play by itself without a trigger.
Hi MCISTraining,
Thanks for sharing the details. Since the audio works in preview but behaves inconsistently after publishing, it may help to run through the steps in this article to rule out any unexpected project behavior:
If the issue persists after trying those steps, please open a support case and share your Storyline file with our team so we can take a closer look at the affected slides and test the behavior with you. We’ll be happy to investigate further.

I've tried everything removed storyline, added storyline, rebuilt the entire file, working locally, using triggers, no triggers. I've never experienced this issue before. I thought I worked it out, but end users are still complaining about missing audio. I need to ask end users to clear cache and start again. I opened a ticket, but have not heard back yet.

do you have audio on the first slide?
If not how does the user get to the first slide with audio is it a timeline ends jump trigger?
For modern browsers the user has to instigate the audio which is a click - PGallupCommunity Member
I've created a blank start slide with a play button, no audio, to move to the next slide with audio. That wasn't successful. There were still random slides that would play with no audio.
The storyline play button appears when the audio starts on the first slide, still there is intermittent audio issues randomly throughout the course.
The only thing that has worked is asking end users to clear cache/cookies in the browser, which isn't realistic when delivering to lots of users. This is a new issue that I've not experienced before.Hi PGallup,
Thanks for the update, and I’m sorry you’re still running into this.
I see that you’ve already opened a support case and are working with my colleague, Gren, which is great. Since the team has your file and is actively investigating, we’ll continue working with you there to gather more details and pinpoint what’s causing the intermittent audio behavior.
Feel free to share any additional findings or patterns you notice in the meantime, and we’ll keep the conversation going in your case.

I have the exact same issue. Running review360 in a private/incognito tab seems to resolve (not a suitable solution). All users experiencing the issue are running in our corporate VPN. When I test it outside of the VPN (on my personal laptop via Review360) the issue is not present. Can you confirm if the same is true for you? Behaviour seems to be identical running the SCORM file as it is in Review360.
