Storyline Modern Player: Menu behaviour
Their is a mobile UI if the screen size is small this will activate could that be what you are seeing, you can fake this by scaling the window or even in the player properties by scaling the window.

Thank you for the reply. I've had a look and yes, that is exactly it. Couldn't do it in preview, but when scaling down the player properties window, the behaviour made an appearance.
What you said made me think, upon reflection, that the colleague was on a very small screen comparative to my own - the scaling of the slide and panels of the Storyline UI gave this away.
