tail/pointer width on captions/speech bubbles?
Is there a way to change the width of the tail on captions? It's tied to the size of the main shape, so if you enlarge the shape or move it very far from whatever you're pointing at, it becomes huge....

FYI: I think a merged shape is a great idea—as long as you're fairly certain about the size and placement of both shapes. It could get tricky, though, if you need to make adjustments.
The best thing about using separate shapes? If you need to expand or contract the text, or if you need to adjust the angle and/or placement of the tail, it's easy to edit each shape to get exactly what you want.
