Tracking & Reporting in Schoology LMS

Hi everyone,

Relatively new Storyline user here.  I'm a content developer for a company, and the Storyline lessons I create are being imported by our clients, who use Schoology, using SCORM 1.2 packages.   Since we don't have a Schoology account at our company to experiment with, it's really hard to see how all the settings we're choosing actually play out.

My question is about how the data from the lessons I create is reported within Schoology.   Essentially, the lessons have two types of questions in them: multiple choice and essay.  These questions are more just informational for the instructor than they are to create a 'score' so students can 'pass' the lessons.  All we're really interested in is what the students typed in the essays, or what answer they picked for the MC questions. I've chosen to set all points to 0 because for our purposes, I don't want students getting a score.  This would mis-represent the learning taking place.

So if all points are set to 0, and we just want the actual data on answers students input, where is that reported in Storyline?  Should that be showing up in the client's gradebook?  Or does it appear somewhere else?  OR do I have to enable some other type of setting I'm not aware of to get this data to report somewhere?

Thanks so much, in advance, for any insight!

  • Hi Tara!  Here is a list of the data that Storyline sends to your Learning Management System.  Once that data is compiled in the LMS database, there's really no limit to what kind of analysis you can perform (assuming Schoology grants access to the data)!

I'd recommend reaching out to your LMS Administrator to find out what options they have available for reporting and data analysis.

    Hi Alyssa,

Slightly different take on my question now, due to some things that have changed.  How do I make the scores from the multiple choice questions show up in the client's LMS gradebook?  Users are taking the courses, answering the questions, and the scores aren't showing up in the gradebook.

    Thanks!

  • Hi there Tara! Two things come to mind:

    1. Do you have a Results Slide after the quiz questions? The "Submit Result" trigger on the Results Slide will communicate the scores to your LMS.
    2. What tracking option did you select when you published for LMS? You'll want to use "Track using quiz result" since your course contains a quiz.

Let me know if that helps, or if we need to keep digging!

      Hi Alyssa,

I do have both of those settings enabled. I figured out what the problem
was, if anyone else in the future has this issue! In Schoology, in the
settings for the Storyline module, there's a box that needs to be checked
that says "Enable Grading" (see screenshot). Seems obvious, but when the
person creating content in Storyline is not the same person with access to
Schoology, it's hard to figure out anything that's going wrong on that end!

      Thanks for your reply. :)

  • Great detective work, Tara! I'm glad you figured it out!

Also, it looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email! No worries, this Peek video will show you how to remove it. :)

I have a slightly different issue with Scorm in Schoology. We are importing a Rise Scorm package into Schoology. The gradebook item is set up and it is set to track the time in the lesson. What I am finding, is that the reporting is inconsistent. Some students show time and others do not, even though I know they have been in the lesson. Is there any troubleshooters out there that know why there would be inconsistent reporting in our LMS?

We have also imported a Quizmaker package - the answers are all open-ended. Again, some students show the interactions and others do not.

Thanks for any thoughts on these issues! -Angela

  • Hello,  I am in Los Angeles where Schoology is in District wide use since the Pandemic started a few years ago.  Are you able to answer the questions above more completely now?  If so, I would like to know how my projects will work with the Schoology LMS.

Last year we tried to use Storyline and Rise SCORM packages in Schoology. Participants had lots of problems with the modules freezing on them and not resuming where they left off. It was very frustrating. Unfortunately, we were not able to make much progress with Schoology's Help Desk. Several days would go by between emails. In the end, we ditched Schoology and moved on to a different LMS.
