translation of closed captions
I have multiple Storyline 360 courses that were created in English and now need to be translated into French. The translation of text feature works very well however the voice translation feature of the narration is cringeworthy at best. I have looked at the new AI translation bots and they are excellent however since I do not have that feature as yet it has been decided to use closed captions over the English narration. Not optimum but better than the awkward existing voice translation.
Here's my problem. I have created the closed captions for each slide, inserted the English text into each caption that corresponds to the each sound wave and now I have to copy and paste each phrase into the WORD document, translate it into French then copy and paste the translation version back into the Storyline project.
Here's my question: Is there an easier way of doing this? It is very time consuming and adding many hours to the cost to my customer.
The translation feature successfully translated everything including the text on the slides but did not translate the closed captions which would have been the ideal.
Hello MaryField and AmandaMackey,
Happy to share that we've just released a new update for Storyline 360!
In Update 123, we've included essential fixes and new features. We've released an enhancement for:
- Export all your project’s closed captions in a single step.
Launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer to take advantage of this update, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You’ll find our step-by-step instructions here.
Please let me know if you need additional help.

Hi Luciana,
is it now possible to import the vtt file again? Because otherwise, as described in the case of Mary and Amanda, the export function doesn't help at all. Or did I misunderstand something?

Hi DorisDengg,
Thanks for following up, and you didn’t misunderstand anything. Update 123 added a way to export all of your project’s captions in one step, as individual files or one combined file, but there isn’t a matching bulk import at the moment. Captions still import one audio track or video at a time, so bringing translated captions back into your project is still a manual step.
Two options may help with that step. The media library lets you import and manage captions for all of your audio and video in one place. And when you import media, a caption file with the same name as its media file, stored in the same folder, imports automatically along with it. I don’t have a timeline to share for importing captions in bulk.
Hi Mary,
Thanks for reaching out!
We currently have this logged as a feature request, so I’ll go ahead and include your voice. We’ll update this discussion if this feature makes it on our feature roadmap.

Hello,
I am just checking in about this requested feature. I am having to individually export over 200 slides to translate the closed captions for a 12-module course. I would love to know if anyone has an efficient way to handle this.

Amanda, I am in a similar position. I have about double the slides to translate and there doesn't seem to currently be an easy solution. I have had to create the closed caption placeholders, type in the required English text, then translate each into French. Of course, you have to create a trigger so that when the slide opens the closed captions appear.
I suppose you could copy and paste the entire narration into a WORD document, translate the document as a whole and then copy and paste each individual phrase into the closed caption placeholder. Either way it's a time-consuming task. The problem with that second option is unless you are fluent in the translated language you might get confused
Articulate has indicated their engineers will work on an easier solution. I hope so.
