Use of voice, first person, and addressing the audience in videos

When making informative videos that are conducting demonstrations or explaining procedure, when you add voiceover narration, do you speak directly to the listener/learner? Such as: "In this video, I will show you how to..." Or do you use language that avoids talking to anyone in particular? Such as: "This video demonstrates how to..." And why did you make that choice, either way? Do you know of any best practices that could support our choice?
  • I prefer speaking directly to the listener/learner to make it more conversational.

Typically, I avoid saying "I" in the narration (or in text on the slide). Instead, I use "we" to indicate the company is speaking.

  • Hi Melanie and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! 🦸‍♀️ I'm also on the side of making the narration conversational because it's more personalized. I wrote a little blurb about it here. In case you want to check it out, Allison LaMotte also wrote a more in-depth article on speaking to instead of at your learners.
