When to use Peek v Replay v screen recording inside SL

Hi All,

I hope someone can explain the differences between Peek, Replay and the regular screen recording functions inside SL360 and why you would use one over the other.  It seems like they all do the same function.

Thanks!

  • Hi Becky,

Great question! While it's true that all three tools allow you to record your screen, they all work a little differently. Here's some food for thought when you're trying to decide which one to use for your project:

    Storyline 360

    • create interactive software simulations (where learners can click around themselves) from screen recordings. You can also
    • break screen recording into slides, making it easy to add additional on-screen information

    Replay 360

    • record your screen and your webcam simultaneously and create a picture-in-picture effect
    • easily edit your screen recording

    Peek 360

    • works natively on both Macs and PCs
    • always available in your menu bar/system tray, so recording your screen is just a click away
    • uploads to Review 360 automatically once you've recorded your screen, providing you with an easy-to-share link
    • there aren't any editing capabilities in Peek 360, so the idea is to record short videos, not to record long tutorials

    I hope that's helpful! :)

      Hi Allison!
Is there any difference between the 3 regarding the quality or is it all the same?

      Thanks in advance!

I have recorded a video in Storyline 360, but when I try to upload into Replay 360 to make edits, Replay is saying it's not in the right format?  It's in a .MP4 format directly done in Storyline 360.  What am I missing?

Sorry for gatecrashing this thread, but i'm looking to create a screen recording and arrows and text boxes and then publish as a video. Which software would be best for that?

I actually use SNAGIT for screen recordings with arrows and text boxes / but I am a 360 devotee so if there is a way to add those in here please someone shout out! :)

Hi Shannon! I just wanted to chime in with a possible option for annotating. In Storyline 360, you can record your screen and then use the timeline to add objects (e.g. text, icon, shapes, etc.) to achieve a similar effect. You can add entrance/exit animations to those objects for a smoother experience.  I personally like to click the play icon on the timeline and then use the keyboard shortcut “c” to add cue points where I want an object to enter/exit. Here’s a video that shows you how to do that. The video is a bit older, but it still works the same. 🙂 I hope that gives you some new ideas!

Also, for those asking when to use which app, here's an article on how to decide which Articulate 360 app to use for screen recording. There's a helpful chart at the bottom to make it easy to compare the different apps.

  • Storyline does all that rather well.  Once you are happy with how it looks publish as a video.

    Hi Howard,

Storyline 360, Replay 360, and Peek 360 all support screen recording and publishing as a video. If you want on-screen annotations—like arrows and text boxes—in your screen recording, though, Storyline 360 will likely be the best fit.
