Hiding the Universal Player Play Button During Videos

Hi eLearning and SL experts,

Ok, so this is a bit long, but I need some help figuring out why this isn't working.  A client provided a template. In the template, they disabled the Player's Play button, but for 508 reasons, one of our developers enabled it again in the universal player. However, in her build, when we have a video slide, the play button in the universal player is hidden to avoid duplicate navigation/video control so that only the play/pause button on the video frame itself will control the video (hope that makes sense).  Presumably, this is because she altered the custom player settings for the video slide so that "Seekbar" is deselected, which is, to my understanding, how one would hide the play/pause button on the SL player itself during a video/media slide.

This template was then shared with some contractors. In reviewing their projects, I noticed that they changed the slide's player settings to "Default" instead of custom.  As a result, the play button in the Storyline universal player was showing and active during the video.  When I updated the slide setting to custom and deselected the seekbar, it made no difference - the play button is still showing.  As far as I can tell, both the universal player settings AND the slide player settings are identical to the original template but the results are different.  There is no javascript execution trigger on the slide or anything, so I'm at a loss as to why the play button is hidden in one version and present in another.

Do any of you wizards have any idea why this might be and what I can do to resolve it?  The goal is to have the play button in the universal player hidden on video slides so that the only play/pause control is done from the video frame itself instead of the universal player's play/pause button.  Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance for any insights you might be able to offer!

  • Hi PeterMercier!

    Happy to help!

When adjusting Player controls at the Slide level, the Play/Pause button and the Seekbar visibility are a combined setting. This option is accessed via Slide Properties > Player Features = Custom for the selected slides. Uncheck the Seekbar option to remove the Play/Pause button visibility on a slide by slide basis.

However, you also have the option to adjust these settings via Player Properties > Player Controls, where the Play/Pause button and the Seekbar are separate options. Unchecking the Play/Pause option from this menu will impact all slides.

If you're still having trouble after those steps, it would be helpful to see a copy of the .story file you've been working with. Feel free to upload that here in the discussion or privately through a support case.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks Steve, but that doesn't appear to be the issue.  The play button is still showing even with the seekbar deselected for the slide.  That's the conundrum!  I'm not sure if I can share the file for client proprietary reasons, unfortunately, but can confirm that the seekbar is deselected in both files, but it's only hidden on the storyline player in one of the files.  Not sure why it's working on one but not the other.
