Thanks Noah! Probably easier to show rather than tell. I can't share this example, but another of my demos uses the same animation techniques.

You can also download a copy of the master file from this page, to see how it works. The layering and animation triggers use the same approach as the Indemnity Jones example.
TL;DR it's state changes and motion paths and the 'idle' and 'run' character states are repeating GIFs.

Ah, I must not have paid enough attention when I viewed the other project. I only reviewed it rather than downloading it. I'll check it out. Thanks for the fast response! Can't wait to figure out how stuff like this works so I can up my "game", pun mildly intended.
