Its brilliant Jeff thanks - very sleak. Do you have any tips on setting up the additional structure. Ive been trying to add the new scenes to link to the menus (via the slide master) - so do the slides M1 M2 etc start each new scene?
This is very sleek! Jeff, in looking at the file, I see the controls added (the green squares), but I don't see a layer for the menu on the slides, triggers, or states. My S2 knowledge is pretty basic, so I'd appreciate it if you'd share how the mechanics of the slides operate. Thanks!
Thanks Jeroen, what a huge difference that is and I've added our company logo at the top.
What I haven't yet worked out is what to do when you have more than 5 topics rather than jumping to scenes - any ideas?
And do you have any ideas on how a user could view a transcript from this new menu?
Any thoughts on these are very much appreciated!
Hi Sandy,
I guess you could squeeze more buttons in the menu, and copy and adjust the triggers as needed.
Not sure what you mean with transcript in this case?
Best wishes,
Jeroen
Hi Jeroen - I have been trying to change the variable on the open menu layer, so that the menu automatically closes once the user clicks on the menu topic.. at the moment you have to click the menu icon to close the menu. and the details that are set up: toggle variable VarShowMenu.. Which doesnt have the option to keep menu open.. .it states show menu = assignment or = NOT assignment
Any suggestions - thanks
Hi Kate,
What if you add the same triggers that are assigned to the menu button to the menu item before the trigger that jumps to the destination of your menu option? That is the 'toggle variable ...' and 'Hide layer ... ' triggers.
Does that make sense?
Good luck,
Jeroen
Hi Jeroen thanks for your suggestion - tried changing using the same trigger on the menu item - however the condition is when the use clicks - I want the it to be automatic, rather than the user having to click to close - so I used the option: hide layer when the timeline starts - but this stops the menu opening at all -
Im just not quite familiar enough with the variable functions, so cant quite work it out :-( Kate
Hi Kate,
Isn't the user clicking the menu item anyway, to select that topic?
I tried it and for me it worked. Did you add the triggers before the jump trigger?
Im not sure what Im doing wrong - but still not working. Just to clarify, I am working on the SHOWMENU layer and the Trigger panel looks like this:
B- MENU 1
Toggle variable VarShowMenu
when the user clicks
Hide layer this layer
when the user clicks
M1 1
Jump to 2.1 Chest pain
When the user clicks
sorry to take up so much of your time
No worries Kate, I am glad I am able to help after figuring some of this out for myself.
I copied the B- Menu 1 triggers and added them to each menu button. So in your example it would look like:
B- MENU 1
Toggle variable VarShowMenu
when the user clicks
Hide layer this layer
when the user clicks
M1 1
Toggle variable VarShowMenu
when the user clicks
Hide layer this layer
when the user clicks
Jump to 2.1 Chest pain
When the user clicks
You will have to repeat that for each menu item. A bit cumbersome, and someone else might have a more elegant solution.
Let me know if it works!
Best wishes,
Jeroen
Thanks Jeroen but I have a large menu that currently includes about 10 topics with 30 sub-topics so that'll be impossible to squeeze onto the one slide.
I had a theory but I've just thrown that out the door, any thoughts on how a large menu could appear and be used?
Hi Sandy,
Sounds to me like an awful lot of topic/subtopic for one elearning module. Any chance you can chop it up into several smaller modules?
You could conceivably have the whole window fill up with a menu, but if that really helps the learner finding their way is doubtful.
Is the ability for the learner to select topics and subtopics essential for the course?
Good luck!
It's an interactive computer based simulation that goes through the many relevant steps new users need to do to completion. It's all in the build stage and the SME likes it, however I envisage the topics/sub-topics being greatly reduced when the FAQ resource is built.
I just liked what you presented and my thoughts around having a larger menu in your style based on my current stage of build went into overdrive - exciting.
Are you developing for PC/Laptop or for mobile devices?
I am thinking that you should be able to have another layer pop up when users click your main topics with your subtopics. That might be neat ...
I really like this and am trying to use it but I've run into a challenge - and I don't know how to resolve it. I'd really like to show a visited state on the menu items once the user has viewed that menu item, but I can't get it to work. I created a change state trigger when user clicks on the slide master, but it's not working. I know one of you gurus has the solution for me!
Thanks so much for being willing to share your expertise!! Attached is the file I'm working on. I'm relatively new to Storyline so I am very appreciative of all learning tips I can get.
Thanks!
Lynn

We discussed this over email, but for others:
One way of solving this here is to create a variable for each menu item that keeps track if a section has been completed. You could set this to complete when the timeline ends on the last slide of a section. In the menu master slide, you would want to add triggers to change the state of the menu button to completed in the condition that the section has been completed.
