Storyline 3: Editing Videos

Use the built-in video editor to polish your video content. Trim and crop to show only the portions you want. Adjust the volume, brightness, and contrast to improve quality. And add a logo or watermark for branding.

Opening the Video Editor

After adding a video, right-click the video placeholder on the slide and select Edit Video.

Tip: Website videos can't be edited in Storyline:

Trimming a Video

If you need only a portion of a video, use the trim feature to select just the part you want.

  1. Click Trim on the ribbon.
  2. Draggable markers will appear on the timeline below your video. Drag these markers to the place where you want the video to start and end.
  3. As you drag the start and end markers, keep an eye on the Trim Start, Trim End, and Trim Duration values in the lower right corner of the editor. They’ll help you see exactly where the video is going to start/end and how long the trimmed version will be.
  4. You can preview the trimmed video using the play/pause and stop buttons in the lower left corner of the window.
  5. If you change your mind and want to revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor, click Reset Video on the ribbon.
  6. When you're finished editing, click Save & Close.

Cropping a Video

The cropping tool lets you change the width and/or height of a video. For example, you might want to crop out something that's distracting, or you might want to control the dimensions so it fits better in your course.

  1. Click Crop on the ribbon.
  2. A resizable cropping window will overlay the video. Click the cropping window to reveal the sizing handles, then drag the borders of the rectangle to select the portion of the video you want to keep. If you want to maintain the original aspect ratio of your video, use the corner sizing handles.
  3. As you drag the cropping window, keep an eye on the Crop value in the lower right corner of the editor. It’ll help you size the video to the exact dimensions you want.
  4. If you change your mind and want to revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor, click Reset Video on the ribbon.
  5. When you're finished editing, click Save & Close.

Adjusting the Volume, Brightness, and Contrast of a Video

Improve the quality of a video by adjusting its volume, brightness, and contrast.

  1. To adjust the volume, click Volume on the ribbon, and use the slider to increase or decrease the percentage. You won’t hear the volume change until you click Save & Close.
  2. To adjust the brightness or contrast, enter percentage values in the Brightness and Contrast fields. The changes will be visible immediately on the video stage, but you won’t see the changes if you preview the video until you click Save & Close. (If you've added a logo to your video, changes to brightness and contrast will also affect the logo.)
  3. If you change your mind and want to revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor, click Reset Video on the ribbon.
  4. When you're finished editing, click Save & Close.

Adding a Logo or Watermark to a Video

Brand your videos with a logo or a watermark.

  1. Click Insert Logo on the ribbon.
  2. Browse to the image you want to use as your logo or watermark and click Open.
  3. Resize the image and place it where you want it to appear on the video.
  4. If you want to apply some transparency to the image for a watermark effect, enter a percentage value in the Transparency field.
  5. If you change your mind and want to remove the image, click Remove Logo on the ribbon. To revert back to the video as it was when you first opened the video editor, click Reset Video.
  6. When you're finished editing, click Save & Close.

Tip: You won't be able to see your logo if you preview the video in the video editor, but it'll show up when you preview or publish your course.
