New Bug - Align to Playhead

Jan 16, 2015

After installing Update 4 (Build 1501.717, release date 1/9/2015), I find the "Align to Playhead" function behaves differently than before. IT DRIVES ME CRAZY!

Here is the problem: The "End" position on the timeline now gets pushed back further each time I use Align to Playhead to move the start time of an event on the timeline to the right.

This messes up my intended end time for my slide, so I now have to spend extra time to manually adjust it. It's like I am being punished for using Align to Playhead, which has been a wonderfully useful function until now.

Is anybody having the same problem? Could this be a new bug introduced by Update 4?

Hi Tim,

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulty you're experiencing with Storyline 2. You may find that aligning objects to the playhead or to cue points unexpectedly lengthens the timeline.

This is a known issue. It'll be fixed in the next software update for Articulate Storyline. In the meantime, you'll need to manually adjust the end of the timeline if it extends unnecessarily.

I'll include this thread in the report filed with our QA team so that we'll be able to update you with any additional information here.

Hi, Tim -

This issue was recently reported again in this thread as not having been corrected with Update 5, and has been resubmitted with our QA Team for further investigation. I will add your thread to the ticket, and update here when I receive more information. In the meantime (as I cannot offer a specific timeframe for resolution), this was offered as a workaround: only use "align to cue point" and make sure it's set to "show until end" by right clicking on the item in the timeline. Hope that helps.

Hi all,

I wanted to provide an update here, as Storyline 2 Update 11 was just released, and included a number of fixes which you can see in the release notes available here. The item you all may be particularly interested in is how it fixed an issue where aligning objects to the playhead would extend the timeline of the slide.

You can download the latest update here, and after downloading and installing the latest update you’ll want to republish any existing content to ensure that the updates and fixes are applied.

Let us know if you have any questions, either here or by reaching out to our Support Engineers directly.

Hi Ashley,

I'm experiencing this issue with Articulate 360. It's functioned like this as long as I can remember but I finally decided to search the forums to see what I could find. I just updated 5 minutes ago so I'm running whatever the most recent version was as of today. I've been dealing with it for years and so I'm used to it but I thought I should point out that it's still an issue that's floating around.

*I should add that the timeline only extends when I am moving ALL items on a slide UP on the timeline (ex. all items are at 10 seconds and I want to move them up to 0)

Hi Nadia,

Thanks for letting us know what you're experiencing, and I'm sorry you're running into this issue in Storyline 360.

Bug: When "Show until the end" is enabled, Align to playhead for an object extends the length of the timeline.

We do have it reported it to our team and continue to keep an eye on it to evaluate how many customers are impacted. We'll jump back in here when there's any news to share on a fix.

Hi Ren, is there a plan to fix this anytime soon? There are forum posts about this going back eight years. If it helps, I have figured out that it seems to occur only if you're extending the beginning of the object's timeline to an earlier point in time, and the amount of time it extends is equal to the difference between the playhead and the beginning of the object's timeline before you aligned it. In other words, if the timeline of the slide is 20 seconds, and the object entered at 7 seconds, and then you align the object's entrance to the playhead at 0 seconds, it extends the entire timeline by 7 seconds to 27 seconds.

Hi All!

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 66, we’ve included important fixes and new features.

One of the fixes we’ve included is the fix for:

When "Show until the end" is enabled, using "Align to playhead" or "Align to Cue Point" for an object extends the length of the timeline.

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!
