Time-Saving Tips for Formatting Tables in Rise 360

Do you love the table block in Rise 360 as much as I do? It’s a great way to organize content so it’s easy for learners to digest. And there are so many different ways to use it! Whether you want to display product specs, outline your weekly schedule, or compare and contrast concepts, tables are an excellent option. 

Depending on how you’re using tables, you might want to customize their look and feel by adding a background color to certain cells, for example, or by changing the font size. Luckily, personalizing table formatting is super quick and easy in Rise 360! Read on to find out how to efficiently format multiple cells at once.

Formatting Multiple Cells

If you want to change the way your cells look—say, change the background color from white to green or gray—there’s an easy way to apply that formatting to multiple cells at once.

Simply click inside a cell, press and hold Shift, use the arrows on your keyboard to select the other cells you want to apply the formatting to, and select the format you want to apply in the toolbar. It’s super easy!

Formatting Text Across Cells

Once you’re happy with the formatting of the cells themselves, you might want to change the formatting of the text within those cells. For example, let’s say you want all your text to be a little smaller. No problem! There are a couple of different ways to quickly format your text across cells, depending on what you want to do.

To apply the same text formatting to all the cells in your table, simply highlight the text in one cell, press and hold Control+A (or Command+A on a Mac), and select the format you want to apply in the toolbar.

If you want to reformat the text across some cells, but not all, highlight the text in one cell, press and hold Shift, and use the down arrow to select the cells with text you want to format. Every time you press on the down arrow, it’ll automatically select the entire text in the next cell. Once you’ve selected all the cells with text you want to format, choose the formatting options you want to apply in the toolbar.

You can also select text that you want to format letter by letter. To do this, highlight the text in one cell, press and hold the Shift key, use the right arrow to select the cells with the text you want to format, and select the format you want to apply in the toolbar.

    Hi, tables have always been a great way to format HTML-based pages, have been using them for about 30 years (God, I am old 👴)

    A great trick for formatting tables is to create the table in Word and format it there, then copy-paste it into a text field in Ride360. Works for a lot of formatting issues but not all.

    Another (rather "nerdy" but very effective and creative) way is via the debug console as described here: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/rise-360/hide-borders-in-table#reply-911260

    This way, you can even include pictures in tables (they need to be web-accessible though, you are actually linking to them) and @MarieForcelli it could be that you can change the table width that way too (haven't tried that myself)

    This functionality does not work for me. When I press SHIFT + DOWN ARROW, it does not highlight text, only the cells. So the floating toolbar is for table edits, not text characteristics. So I end up having to format cell by cell by cell. CTRL-A also does not work for me. When I try to select all text in the table, CTRL+A repositions my cursor in the top left cell of the table.

    I cannot figure out what is happening and it is making what should be a very simple task unnecessarily time-consuming.

    Sorry to hear you're having trouble formatting table cells with shortcut commands in Rise 360!

    The SHIFT + ARROW KEYS only selecting the cells themselves is expected behavior. This command allows you to select all of the cells quickly and apply formatting edits. Also, are you working on a Mac or PC? The CTRL+A shortcut also repositioned the cursor as you described, as I'm working on a Mac. However, using COMMAND+A selected text from all cells as expected.

      Hi StevenBenassi ,

      I am on a PC, so CTRL-A should do it. Unfortunately, it keeps taking me back to the first cell.

      SHIFT+DOWN does highlight multiple cells. But the floating toolbar only lets me format the cell, column, row, etc. None of the functions for text editing (e.g., bold, italics, bulleting, etc.) appear. So I end up having to highlight text individually in each cell, which is a huge time commitment with some of the tables I have in place.

    The example I shared in my last reply was captured using Google Chrome. Does this same behavior occur across all supported browsers, or is it local to one? Also, seeing a screen recording of the issue as you're experiencing it on your end would be helpful! If you'd prefer to share that privately, please do so through a support case.
