Designing E-Learning in Black and White #513: Challenge | Recap
🏆 Challenge of the Week
This week, your e-learning challenge is to design a short demo using only black and white colors.
Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s famous quote, “When I don’t have any blue, I use red,” this week it's all about embracing constraints.
Reducing color to its bare essentials encourages you to think more critically about contrast, hierarchy, and visual composition. It is not so much about what you cannot use, but rather about what you can do with what remains.
🎯 Challenge Goals & Objectives
- Learn how to communicate visually through value, contrast, and typography
- Practice using tints and shades to establish visual hierarchy and mood
- Explore ways to create visual interest without relying on color
🚀 Tips for Getting Started
Here are some ways to approach this week’s challenge:
- Start with your layout: Let composition and whitespace do the heavy lifting since you won’t have color to lean on.
- Use tints and shades strategically: Use lighter or darker tones of gray for accent colors.
- Draw inspiration from vintage media: Old film, print ads, and monochrome photography are rich with ideas for contrast, lighting, and mood.
⚒️ Authoring Tools
You’re welcome to use any authoring tool you’d like this week. If you’re short on time, try quickly mocking up your ideas using PowerPoint, Figma, or your favorite graphics app.
🙌 Share Your E-Learning Work
You put in the effort, now make sure your work gets seen:
- Personal blog: If you have a blog, please write about your example from this week’s challenge and share the link with your submission.
- Social media: Please share your examples on LinkedIn and mention both David & Articulate using the #ElearningChallenge tags so we can help promote your work.
- Support your peers: With the new submission format, you can comment directly on each example. Try leaving helpful feedback on at least three projects this week
- Community forums: Feel free to cross-post in the forums to give your work even more visibility.
