Using 3D Models in E-Learning #347: Challenge | Recap

Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to share an example that uses 3D models. Your demo can be interactive or static. You can use 3D assets already created so don’t feel like you have to learn to build in 3D this week.

If you’re new to 3D, that’s okay. We have a few users in the community who regularly work with programs like Blender and SketchUp. Post your questions and we’ll try to get you the help you need.

For those of you who intend to learn to build your own models this week, try to keep things simple. You don’t want to lose your time trying to build a teapot (inside joke for 3D Max users).

Interactive Video Using 3D Models in PowerPoint

Tom recently posted some fantastic tutorials on how he used the PowerPoint's 3D model library  (requires Office 365) to create interactive videos. This is super easy to create in PowerPoint and make interactive using Storyline’s triggers and slide layers.

Using 3D Images to Create Interactions

Here’s a good example of how a series of static images can be used from a 3D model.

Guess what? You don't have to work with 3D models to use 3D graphics. Sites like PixelSquid offer asset libraries that feature rendered models that can be downloaded as individual images. To create the rotating effect like David created, you would need to download a series of images for each step in the rotation.

Free 3D Modeling Applications

The easiest way to get started working with 3D would be to use PowerPoint’s 3D models if you have an Office 365 subscription. Since the models are already built, you can easily insert, rotate, and export the models from within PowerPoint.

Here are a few sites that offer free and popular modeling programs:

Know of some other free 3D modeling programs? Let me know know in the comments and I’ll update the list.

Thanks Ron, Tracy and Joanna. Yes Ron and Joanna, you get it. They are hotspots moving with a path of motion following the position of each face of the cube second by second on the screen as it rotates.

I realize that I forgot to start my post with salutations : Bonjour Heroes!

Nice one, Thierry. Did you place hotspots on chapter numbers appearing on time to match specific cube face?

This is really cool--I could see using this for an online geometry quiz!

      Jonathan,

I like how the reveal happens for each option. The swap was very clean. Was this layers?

Thanks Ron and kinda, yeah. It's an old trick, where I place all of the videos on the base layer and use the visibility settings in the layers to hide the unwanted videos.

This means there isn't such a noticeable gap between the videos than if the videos were placed in each layer or across several slides. Also means the same action buttons can sit over all of the videos.

It's the same method I highlight here: https://engagebraintrain.com/one-step-vyond/

(See the section titled, The 'over-under' conundrum.)
  • I'd like to submit an example of my work.... but not sure how to do so.

If you have an Articulate account you can upload to Review and then share the link. If you don't have an Articulate account you can create a free Amazon Web Service account, save it there then share the link. There's a little more to it, but that is the general gist.

I really like, Joanna. It works perfectly. At first I didn't realize what I was seeing. And suddenly: Hey! Ho! This guy is moving! As you say, you totally caught my attention.

I'm with Tracy. I have one in the kitchen and one in the garage and need a refresh on how to use them. This was a good reminder.

This is a good, practical demo. I have 2 kitchens in my home, and fire extinguishers in each, but I just realized I have no idea how to use them. Your demo inspired me to actually look closely at them and read the instructions!

Tracey - this is fabulous. Thank you for sharing. Are you able to further explain where you got the 3D images from of the hubble? I can see you reference powerpoint assets but not quite sure how to track these down. Just wanting to test replicating this awesome package. Thank you in advance for your advice.

        Hi Sevana,

Thank you, Sevana! There are a couple of ways to find the Hubble image in PowerPoint. (There is only one Hubble image in the presentation, shown from various angles.)

When PowerPoint opens, there is a screen that opens up and you can search for themes and templates. I searched for 3D, and several templates came up, including the one for the Hubble.

Also, on the PowerPoint ribbon, there is a tab called 3D models. You can click on that and search for "Hubble," and download the same image.

Great demo, Tracy. Nice narration and background music too. My take away info would be: the telescope can get from NY to LA in 10 mins - that's impressive!

This is beautiful. I just got a new laptop and my new screen was made for looking at this! Love it!

I haven't thought about 3d animations since ELC# 232, so I had to see what I did back then. In #347 I used PPT 3D animations and converted them to videos. I tried to show different sides of a hummingbird as if it were being viewed in a field from all sides--but I don't think hummingbirds actually ever encounter lupines in their natural environment.

And did I say before that I love the new cover slide feature in the player? :)

Great job masking all that Jodi. Btw Google says Lupines are ideal for attracting spring hummingbirds!

Yes, I looked it up too! :) Hey, what happened to your museum tour? I wanted to come back to it? I've been offline for a couple days.

Very nice build and use of the morph transition. Plus, some of the comments in the text bubbles were quite funny.

I like this trick Tracy. Lean and Mean and gets the visuals spot on. I'm still looking for the Lawyer getting eaten easter egg tho. : )

Nice Teo. I had some trouble with the responsiveness of the buttons, but eventually it all seemed to work well.
