Using If-Then Scenarios in E-Learning #475: Challenge | Recap

When it comes to scenarios, many new course designers don’t know where to start. They think it has to be this massive activity with endless choices and outcomes to be effective, or they worry they don’t have the right content or enough time. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t.

Instead of jumping into an epic choose-your-own-adventure saga, start small with something simple—like, ‘If this happens, then that happens.’

They’re a super practical way to show cause and effect without getting tangled up in complex branching. Plus, it’s a great way to practice and really get to know your authoring tools while creating simple decision-making activities. And that’s what this week’s challenge is all about!

🏆 Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to create an interactive scenario using the if-then format.

Using Rise? Try using an accordion or flashcard interaction to show your cause-and-effect relationships. The purpose of these challenges is to help you learn and master your tools, so you can use them creatively to solve problems.

  • Bonjour Heroes.
I've been waiting for the challenge to start up again for a month... I didn't look on last Monday or Tuesday, and bang! it started without me. Story of my life. I'm still fighting to keep up with what's going on in this community I love, despite the notifications not working for me.
Anyway, I'm glad to see you all again! I hope you had a good vacation.
Like Jodi, I took the challenge description literally: If... and If... then...   With a handful of true/false variables that allow you to display different layers or change the state of the texts, you can explore a bunch of dry statistics while keeping the learner engaged, I hope.

Thierry, I like the opportunity to view the data in different ways.  My major recommendation would be around colors of text.  I have a hard time making out the information for either the women or men because of the contrast between the font and the background.  Other than that, it looks like a great way to pull information for a user based on their inputs.

I thought this was a great way to show data comparisons! It gave me a lot of ideas for an interaction.

Here I applied if/then to make a mandatory education course on Information Security more enjoyable. You navigate three decision based short stories and then take the cinematic escape room style quiz—Night at the Abandoned Hospital. I had fun creating the quiz part, inspired by a game based post by Mehran and the video game Life is Strange.

This is a fully playable interactive story that features a character who has to make choices on his journey and will succeed (or not) if you help him make the right decisions.

It's a personal project where I tried to combine 2 of my professional passions: effective e-learning and teaching Microsoft 365 (cloud storage, etc).
Have fun and let me know what you think of it :-)
