Persuading Learners to Donate Blood #286: Challenge | Recap
Most e-learning courses fall into one of two groups: information and performance. Information courses focus on pushing information and creating awareness or understanding. Performance-based courses are designed to change behavior. Both types of courses are completely valid.
I think there’s a third group of courses that fits somewhere between information and performance: persuasive e-learning.
Persuasion is more often used in advertising than in corporate e-learning. But persuasive courses have similar qualities to information and performance courses. Those qualities include:
Gaining learners' attention;
Creating awareness and interest;
Changing perspectives;
Encouraging action and change from learners.
How do you use persuasion to motivate and encourage action? That’s what this week’s challenge is all about!
Challenge of the Week
This week, your challenge is to share an information-based demo or interaction to persuade learners to consider donating blood. You can choose any interaction or storytelling approach you like. This week’s challenge is more about using e-learning to persuade and encourage action.
To help you get started, I’ve created a simple project overview to help you get started.
Project Overview: Donating Blood
Giving blood is a simple process, yet there always seems to be a blood shortage. There’s an even greater need for blood in the fight against the coronavirus.
According to the Red Cross:
The Red Cross holds about 500 blood drives every day;
1 donation can potentially save up to 3 lives;
Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood;
Less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets; and,
Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured; They can only come from volunteer donors.

I'm a stats person, so data helps persuade me, along with knowledge of results. I like to see the impact of something. My demo shows how donated blood is used.
I've never really given this topic much thought so this was a good challenge for me. The last time I donated blood I fainted (not from the sight of blood) but from being light-headed. I dropped right in the middle of Sheridan Road in Evanston, IL. The other time I considered blood donation was when my dad was being treated for leukemia--he and I were looking at the bag of plasma he was taking. We were wondering how many people had to donate to fill that bag up.
Here's a very brief entry, focusing on donating blood plasma for a trial into Covid-19 treatments. It's UK-based and uses our now very familiar background from the 'Stay alert...' campaign.
I used Adobe Illustrator to create the background and then saved time by inserting it on the slide master.
Because the background is yellow, I had to change the accessibility focus rectangle to red so it could be seen. The default is yellow, so obviously that was invisible on a yellow background.
Being from the U.S., I had to Google what the U.K. "Stay Alert" campaign was and I think you've captured it beautifully here, especially considering the vivid color scheme!
Thanks for this challenge, David. The topic of blood donation is close to my heart, as my father was a Distinguished Honorary Blood Donor and I'm very proud of him.
I think that surprising people with facts and figures can help bring about a call to action. Test your knowledge about blood needs & supply, then take the next step.
KImberly, I really liked how you used the quiz as an instructional element. This is one of my favorite techniques and the different types of interactions you used made it very engaging!
Welcome to the challenges! I really like your visuals for this. The font choice is very clear and easy to read.
My one suggestion is that some of the text goes away pretty quickly. For us slow readers we need a bit more time to digest. I would recommend adding in a button to allow learner to manually navigate the course. You could either use the built in player buttons for this or add in your own stylized buttons. Either way, you'll be able to make sure everyone can read the course at their own pace and increase the interactive element! Nice work!

Echoing Carrie's suggestions! I particularly enjoyed the part in your demo when the viewer could stop and think about why they would donate blood. I think the opportunity to pause and reflect is a good technique for persuading action!
I'm persuaded by emotion, so that was the inspiration for my demo. The personal stories I shared are mostly creative writing for purposes of this challenge, loosely based on people I know.
Techniques I used in the challenge included transitions, SFX, animations, and using the "format", "fragment" function in PowerPoint to turn words into individual photo letters.

Hi Hami! I really loved your extra research and information that you put in - especially the last data point that even though it's a 40 minute process, only 15 - 20 of that is actually drawing blood. Really loved the 3D bar graph with this too! Thank you for sharing!
It's so interesting to see information from other Red Cross Societies around the world! I agree with everyone with regards to the 3D bar graph; seeing that downward trend alone is very persuasive to encourage blood donations!

I think there’s a third group of courses that fits somewhere between information and performance: persuasive e-learning.

Persuasion is more often used in advertising than in corporate e-learning. But persuasive courses have similar qualities to information and performance courses. Those qualities include:

Changing perspectives;

Encouraging action and change from learners.

Giving blood is a simple process, yet there always seems to be a blood shortage. There’s an even greater need for blood in the fight against the coronavirus.

According to the Red Cross:

The Red Cross holds about 500 blood drives every day;
\n
1 donation can potentially save up to 3 lives;
\n
Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood;
\n
Less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets; and,
\n
Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured; They can only come from volunteer donors.

I'm a stats person, so data helps persuade me, along with knowledge of results. I like to see the impact of something. My demo shows how donated blood is used.
I've never really given this topic much thought so this was a good challenge for me. The last time I donated blood I fainted (not from the sight of blood) but from being light-headed. I dropped right in the middle of Sheridan Road in Evanston, IL. The other time I considered blood donation was when my dad was being treated for leukemia--he and I were looking at the bag of plasma he was taking. We were wondering how many people had to donate to fill that bag up.

Here's a very brief entry, focusing on donating blood plasma for a trial into Covid-19 treatments. It's UK-based and uses our now very familiar background from the 'Stay alert...' campaign.
I used Adobe Illustrator to create the background and then saved time by inserting it on the slide master.
Because the background is yellow, I had to change the accessibility focus rectangle to red so it could be seen. The default is yellow, so obviously that was invisible on a yellow background.

Welcome to the challenges! I really like your visuals for this. The font choice is very clear and easy to read.
My one suggestion is that some of the text goes away pretty quickly. For us slow readers we need a bit more time to digest. I would recommend adding in a button to allow learner to manually navigate the course. You could either use the built in player buttons for this or add in your own stylized buttons. Either way, you'll be able to make sure everyone can read the course at their own pace and increase the interactive element! Nice work!
