Adding triggers to the built in menu

I have a course with some branching scenarios. Which one the learner gets directed to depends on an earlier selection (tracked with a text variable). Is there any way to add a trigger to the built in menu on the player so they just see the options available to them based on their earlier choice? I know I can achieve this with a custom menu but ideally I'd like to do it with the built in menu.
