Corrupt or Invalid files

Sep 25, 2015

I am 3/4 way through building a course in Storyline 2 and as I was saving it, my computer crashed. Now when I try opening the 76MB file, I get one of the following error messages:

error 1

error 2

There are no back ups and our IT dept are unable to recover earlier versions.

Am I doomed to starting again or does anyone have any advice/suggestions?

I'm crossing all fingers and toes!!

Thanks!

Stella

Hi Stella!

I'm not sure what post you found, but glad that you were able to get yourself sorted :)

We like to share the following:

There may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer:

%appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Also, be sure to always create, edit, and publish projects on your local hard drive. Working from a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, such as file corruption, an inability to save changes, and loss of resources. See this article for details.

I am having the same issue today - both error messages. I just realized that the file I'm working in is on a network drive - I thought I had it saved locally. Anyway, I tried looking in the AppData / Local folder and there isn't one for Storyline.  I looked under Articulate - no folder. I can restore to a version from yesterday, which helps me not have to create the entire project over, but wondering if there is another way to get the file?

Hi Rebecca and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Since you mention that you're working off of a network drive, your temp files may be located there as well.

Perhaps just a scan of all files with your file name to see if you can identify it.

The project file is not a part of the data that gets published to Review. Think of it as publishing to an LMS, the published output cannot produce a project file.

Hi Hannah, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you are seeing when searching your temp files.

  • Are you getting an error when accessing your file?
  • If you're working on a network or shared drive, your temp files may be located there.

Please be sure that you are working locally, typically on your C: Drive:

Storyline: Create, Edit, and Publish Courses on Your Local Hard Drive

I wanted to share an additional idea to open your file:

  • Find the project in File Explorer.
  • Copy the project. Right-click and click "copy" in the dropdown.
  • Go to your "Documents" folder and create a new folder.
  • Paste the project into the new folder.
  • Open Storyline, and open the project.
