Course shows as passed when user exits after answering one question

Nov 30, 2021

I have a course with 18 questions. When a user completes the course in one sitting, everything works as expected. When the user answers 1 question correctly in the course and then exits, Storyline submits the response to the LMS and the LMS shows the course as complete. Is there any way to prevent Storyline from sending the result to the LMS until after the user has completed the quiz completely?

Hi Cris,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you are experiencing with your project file.

I want to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening with your permission. You can share it publicly here or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when troubleshooting is complete.

Hi Ankit,

Please feel free to elaborate and help customers directly in your reply as that is the most helpful thing for our community.

Hello! I appreciate the offer to assist. Due to security policies I cannot share the project file. If there is any information I can provide to help answer my question, please let me know. In general I'd like to understand what Storyline sends to the LMS when the user exits the course mid-stream. Thank you!

Hi, Cris.

Are you able to share details or screenshots of your Reporting and Tracking options?

It would be helpful to know:

  • Which tracking options do you have selected?
  • How are you reporting to the LMS (Passed\Failed, Completed\Incomplete, etc.)
  • Which standard are you using (SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, TinCan, etc.)?

Thank you! Here you go:

Standard: SCORM 1.2

Side note: When I try setting Report status to LMS as: "Pass / Incomplete" and the user exits after answering 1 or 2 questions, the LMS shows it as "Completed Unsuccessfully" in red, which is also not what we are looking for.

I hope that helps provide the information you're looking for.

Thank you!

Hi, Cris.

Thank you for the additional information!

My first suggestion would be to rule out LMS issues by testing your project with SCORM Cloud. Check out this step-by-step article!

I created a sample quiz with four questions and the exact settings you have above. I simulated the learner getting the first question correctly, then leaving the course, and this is my report:

SCORM Cloud Reporting 2021-12-02 at 10.12.38 AM

I believe this is the result you're looking for.

If it works in SCORM Cloud, I'd recommend reaching out to your LMS to see if there are specific settings you might have to change on their end.

I'd like to check one more thing, since you mentioned that the learner correctly answered the first question before leaving the course. On your Results slide, do you have the option to only score viewed questions checked?
