Essay Question answer appearing on LMS

Apr 09, 2013

This has been driving me a little bit nuts for the past hour or so...hoping the wonderful community can help me?!

Basically I want to record the answers to Essay Questions and for these answers to be visible in LMS reports. I assumed this would be relatively straight forward but that would appear to not be the case. I thought I could insert the essay survey question, insert a results slide reporting on the essay question and that would be that...but nope.

Anyway, I'm hoping I'm just being a bit daft and that there is an easy solution....

Any help much appreciated : )

Hi Greg,

Sounds like you've got it set up properly - it's important to make sure you're using that results slide to track the essay question. Unfortunately, not all LMSs report equally. Here's the full set of data that Storyline will send to an LMS, but it's up to the LMS to interpret and display that data.

Which LMS are you using?

Have you checked to see if the essay response gets reported in something like SCORM Cloud

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your response. I uploaded a sample to SCORM Cloud and it didn't throw up any errors. The debug file had the text I entered into the essay question box so it would appear as if I set it up correctly - it's just that it's not showing up in LMS reports. The LMS I use is provided by a third party - I think it's called Activate - I may raise this issue directly with them to see if there is anything they can do...

Again, thanks for your assistance.

Kind regards,

Greg

Hi all

I've come to the discussion forum for a similar reason to Greg's, so it was interesting to see the responses, especially the list of recordable formats.

My issue is possibly an addendum. We used to direct users to the lms via a link available on the intranet which was defaulted to the IE browser. However, with adobe flash being having potential vulnerabilities, our LMS  provider no longer supports content using flash players.  Instead, all modules are now created html5 albeit with a flash fall back and users are directed to open the lms using Chrome.

Those that completed one recent knowledge check on IE had all the quiz data appearing within the LMS,  namely the quiz bank question number randomly selected, the question and their response. However those completing the same module but using Chrome didn't have any of these details appearing in the LMS.

Has anyone else found this to be the case and if so, is there a way to resolve the issue?

Hi Jo,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble in Chrome--I can help! First, what version of Storyline did you use to create the course?

Also, have you tested the HTML5 output in another environment, like SCORM Cloud? If the same problem happens in SCORM Cloud, then we'll want to take a closer look at the Storyline file.

Let me know if you'd like some help with that testing!

Hello everyone. This question has been around for a long time. I don't see a definitive answer provided above, so I figured I'd respond.

The answer, I can say for certain, is that Storyline 360 does report the text entered into a survey question of any type. I tested this using ScormCloud by publishing a course with Pick One, How Many, Essay, and Which Word type questions in SCORM 1.2 format. When you publish as SCORM 2004, the only significant difference is that the text of the question is also reported along with the answers.

If you are not able to see these results in your LMS, you may need to create a custom report. Otherwise, I'd suggest contacting their support team and asking them if there is a way to see the data. Some cloud-based LMSs are very limited and very restricted it may not always be possible.
