How to Resolve "File is Locked by Another Process" Message
Dec 14, 2020
Just to share what works for me:
I've gotten this message in the past, and I've tried the recommended fixes (copy the file, rename the file, work off desktop, disable automatic backups, etc., etc.). I've found those methods very time consuming, and usually the problem returns.
What works for me every time, though, and does not require me to create additional versions is to NOT open the file by double-clicking on it in the folder . . . but instead open Storyline first. Then, click the "Browse for more" link in the lower left corner of the Storyline pop up window. Then, click on the file. This works flawlessly, and eliminates the need to move or duplicate the file.
My theory is that when you double-click on the file in the folder, that Storyline sort of "gets ahead of itself" in a way because it's trying to open the program and the file at the same time and will sometimes (but not always) produce the error. And I've found that larger files produce the error more often than smaller files, probably because there's more for Storyline to unpack, and it just gets a little "flustered" doing so. When you launch Storyline first, and then launch the file, the error doesn't occur.
Just my two cents. Hopefully this helps.

I have noticed if you open from within storyline it definitely happens less. Also waiting for the preview image to load in explorer helps
This also solved an issue where I could not open a file even after duplicating. Thank you so much for sharing!
Great tip I often wondered about this and ensuring that I'd opened the most recent file. Thank you!
