Page-Turn Interaction with Accessibility Features

Jun 15, 2021

Good morning, all! This is my first time sharing work here in the Articulate community. I was very fortunate to come across a Page-Turn Interaction by Allison Lamotte from several years ago, using Storyline 2.

I made some basic changes and added different content. I obviously need to reduce the text on each page, but my goal for this version was to make sure that the Focus Order was correctly set up so that learners who use screen readers can easily tab through and use other keyboard shortcuts to navigate through the module.

So, yay for that!

But.

I've run into a usability issue. I can tab through objects on the page just fine (see the Focus Order screenshot) and when I hit Enter on the "Previous Page" element it takes me back a page. However, when I tab to "Next Page" and hit enter, it does not advance.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Any and all feedback is much appreciated... including how to properly credit a template to an author.

Yay E-Learning! Thanks, everyone!

Emily

Hi Emily!

I'm happy to help! I downloaded Allison's file and saw the original triggers Jump to the Next Slide when the Audio is Complete. Instead, I'd recommend using the trigger Jump to Next Slide when the User Clicks Picture 1.

Then a user can tab to Picture 1, press Enter, or the spacebar on their keyboard to move to the next slide. If that doesn't do the trick, would you mind sharing the .story file with us? You can either attach it to this discussion or upload it privately in a support case.

Hi Lauren! Thanks for the response. I've attached a screenshot of my current triggers on that first slide, but I'm also attaching my project file.

I really appreciate another set of eyes because it's still not behaving. You can tab to it, but when you hit spacebar, it will only play the audio. It won't advance.

Also-- It's interesting that you mentioned the Audio because that's also doing something weird... In preview, you hear the audio file of the page-turning before you even click on the button.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help!

Hi Emily!

Thank you for sharing your file! It looks like we just need to move the triggers to the top of the order and specifically call out the next slide. I've recorded a quick demo on how to make these changes in your course. Here's the link.

I also attached the updated project to this reply!
