Question about step by step simulations from existing videos

Aug 15, 2022

Hello,

I'm new here but have gained a ton from the forums and this community.

Working on a school project and didn't realize that a step-by-step simulation feature was available in which you can use storyline to record your screen and then have it create slides based on the interactions that occurred in your interactions.

I had already screen recorded a video on my iphone as an mp4 (and I can't redo it).  I tried to play the video on my computer and have articulate record the playing video.  Articulate did record my screen, but I was only able to generate one slide out of it-and it was a slide related to my video player (play button).

So, does anyone know of a way to create step-by-step slides from a pre-existing video?  Maybe I could tweak some settings to generate more than just the one slide.

And for my reference, how does this functionality work?  It seems that it is somehow tapping into the mouse clicks that happen live on your machine...maybe that is why the mouse clicks in my mp4 weren't registering as actions?

Thanks for any feedback on this topic.  I'm sure I'll make great use of this functionality moving forward.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for reaching out!

You'll need to use Storyline 360's screen recording feature if you'd like to create step-by-step slides. Unfortunately, this means that you cannot convert a recording that you made using other devices into step-by-step slides in Storyline 360, because Storyline 360 needs to recognize the actions that you are doing during a recording for it to properly generate the slides.

For more information on step-by-step slides, refer to this article:

Hope this helps!

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your information.  You answered my question and your comment on not using other devices to record probably saved me some more time.

I am going to do a few tests with my Samsung phone connected to my computer with an app called Samsung Flow.  The pairing displays your phone screen and allows you to control your phone with your computer mouse and keyboard. So if this works to screen record phone app interactions I will be using that technique a lot.

Thanks again,

Justin
