Reducing SCORM package file size

May 05, 2018

One of my customers has an LMS named ELMO and says it only accepts SCORM version 1.2 files under 50Mb in file size.

Some of my courses are around 70Mb and breaking them into smaller courses is a big job.

The courses are mostly software simulations using Record Screen with step-by-step modes (View mode and Test mode) The videos also have a lot of Tex-to-Speech audio.

Are there any simple ways to compress the SCORM file size further?

Thanks!

Hi there, Georgena!

I have seen courses bigger than 592 MB successfully upload to an LMS. I'm with Matthew on checking in with your LMS team about any limits and testing the package in SCORM Cloud, a free LMS testing environment we use.

If you'd like a hand with testing, you can share the output file with us by using this private upload link.

I was going through this discussion. In case, if some of you face the problem of reducing the published SCORM size further (image, audio, video) so that it can fit the LMS or come to a reasonable size for end user to play , one can make use of http://doctorelearning.com to compress further. This will save the repetitive work of finding media files and compressing manually one by one.

Hey All, Can anyone please tell me if there is a "best practice" file size "limit" for SCORMs? Our IDs are creating some very large <1gb files - which contains LOTS of how to videos, voice overs etc. Breaking into smaller files is not really an option.  I know that the larger the file the longer the upload or if end user bandwidth is a problem it could be very slow for the end user. But when end user bandwidth is not an issue - what guidelines could/should be followed re. size? Appreciate any feedback. thanks
