Stuttering/Jerky Playback Caused By Fade Transition

Mar 29, 2018

Hi there,

We currently use Storyline 3 and have the latest update as of 3/28/18.

When we move between slides, we typically use the "Fade" transition.

We don't know when it started, but we recently noticed that the "Fade" transition causes slides containing MP4 videos to stutter or become jerky when they start.

The issue only occurs when a transition is placed on the slide in question. If there isn't a transition, like "Fade," then the video on that slide plays normally.

I attached a test file to illustrate what I'm talking about. There's a scene to show the video running smoothly without a transition and one to show it stuttering with a transition. Specifically, the ball quickly jerks to the left for a moment before starting on it's correct path.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a way to fix it without having to remove all transitions from all projects?

Thanks for the help!

Hi there, Michael.  I'm seeing the same thing in Preview and in the published HTML5 output of your example.  The Flash output didn't have the same stutter.  I know it's impacting the quality of your learners' experience.

I'm going to document this behavior for my team, and I'll be able to update you in this discussion with any updates.

Thanks for responding and looking into a solution!

For anyone who stumbles on this thread in the meantime, I added a short frame hold/freeze frame (less than 1 second) at the beginning of my videos before adding them to Storyline for a temporary fix. Now, when the videos start, they're a lot less jerky, because of the lack of immediate movement. This isn't a realistic solution for everyone/everything, but it might be something people can do if they have the same issue and need a fix immediately.

Hi Lauren,

I determined the issue with they jerky motions in the video appeared to be related to combination of the high resolution I was rendering my story in (1920x1080) and the relative lack of computing power of the PC I was using to publish the solution. I determined this because I did not have an issue when rendering the video at 1280x720 or when I published from another, apparently more powerful PC, my wife uses. Thanks so much for the follow up, though.

Thanks so much for the follow up and for such a wonderful product!

Hi Daniella,

Thank you for letting us know and for sharing your workaround! It looks like our team is continuing to investigate this issue, so I'll be sure to include your comments on our open report.

Thank you again for reaching out, and we'll be sure to share updates as soon as we receive them!

Hello Dakota!

Thanks for sharing your project! I am noticing the video is a tad jerky in your project. The reason for this is that the clips are all on separate layers. Have you considered publishing that slide as a .mp4 and then importing the .mp4 back onto one slide?

Secondly, I have published the course for Review, and I see the videos play. Here's my test.

Please let me know if that would work for your course!

Hi everyone,

I have found something a little different, but equally frustrating.

I am creating a highlight video using SL 360.

I add my triggers, pause, play and nothing more.  No transitions, nothing fancy.

When I preview the file in SL, it runs fine. Not irregularities of any kind.

I take the footage and publish it as a video.  I take the video and put it in Replay to add my audio to combine everything.

When I play it in Replay, the video starts normal, shows the triggers/pause functions, then it rewinds to the beginning of the video again and just plays like normal.

I've attached both the SL and Replay for reference.  This is only one video for an example.

Any suggestions and/or help is appreciated!
