Possibility of having fewer match options than choice options?

May 18, 2022

Hello,

In the course I am building, I have a Drag-and-Drop activity where users have to match 7 different items with 1 of the 3 different topic areas. So for example, 1 topic area may have 2 items, 1 may have 3 items, etc. I am trying to make a 508-Compliant version of this activity. My first thought was the Matching Drop-Down, however it isn't really working because it treats repeated topics as unique topics. I have added attachments of my draft versions in case that's unclear. Is there a workaround for this, or is there a different type of question/activity that may better suit this activity? I have tried a few others and while multiple choice/choose all that apply could work, I would like this to all occur on one slide if possible. Thank you!

Hi Brian and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! 🙂 I don't recall seeing any examples of that type of interaction, but I did see this discussion that asks a similar question. The post is a bit older, but definitely check out the idea Wanda shared about possibly using the freeform pick many option and then using columns. I hope that gives you some new ideas!

Brian,

Since your activity must meet accessibility requirements, I would stay away from a custom drag and drop.

As you have discovered, a standard Multiple Response format won't work because it's limited to 10 answer choices. I recommend using a custom Multiple Response question (see mock-up attached...those are checkboxes added using Storyline's Insert > Input > Check Boxes menu option).

When the user selects the Submit button have a trigger check to see if the state of the appropriate checkboxes is "Selected." If so, show a "Correct" layer. If not, show an "Incorrect" feedback layer. Using a numeric variable called "Attempts" (or whatever), you could give the user multiple tries.

If you have trouble setting this up, use Photoshop, PowerPoint or another tool to mark the correct answers in the image I have attached and I'll be happy to put this together for you. I build these types of activities often.
