As the title says...'I am totally new to e-learning' so any top tips you would like to share, where to start, what not to do etc - I am all ears! Looking forward to learning a new skill.
The thing I found is what qualifications can help me, look for courses on Instructional Design. I'm based in the UK and there's plenty.
Other than that, have fun! Play with Storyline and Rise. Look at other examples of eLearning and pick out bits you like but highlight things you're not so keen on and think "why?"

Finally, as you are building a course (assuming you're building a course for someone else, and not just yourself), be sure to ask a ton of questions, even if you think you know the answer. Always test your assumptions. If the client says "we need to have x in the course," ask why. Let them know you're asking questions, even when some things seem obvious, because you need to verify and not just make assumptions about what you think they mean. A lot of teaching in any format is translating content from a Subject Matter Expert to layman's terms.
I've found this community to be very helpful to beginners. Be sure to ask lots of questions here too. And good luck!

And as Thaddeus mentioned, the Weekly E-Learning Challenges are a great opportunity to work on your development skills, so it might be a good idea to build a few sample courses in Rise 360 and Storyline 360 (both available in Articulate 360). You can participate in the challenges at any time. And if you want to see some examples, you can look at the challenge recaps or check out the E-Learning Examples hub for some inspiration.
And if you have an Articulate 360 subscription, you have access to Articulate 360 Training, which includes video guides and webinars with e-learning experts that teach you how to use the apps and do all kinds of cool stuff.

If you are starting out I highly recommend you look at the E-learning changeless on this site (Learn > E-learning Examples).
Many of the entries will share their files. Open these files and look at how they are created.

Storyboard your modules first.
Never become attached to ideas, be ready to ditch everything.
Test, test and test again.
