Adding Closed Captioning to a video in the new custom block
Hello,
I've inserted a video into a custom blank block and it appears there's not a way to add closed captioning or at least allow them to see the script, like in an audio file in the custom block.
Am I missing something?
When you upload an audio track, there's the option to upload the script so the learner can click on the script icon, but not the same for a video.
Is this only available when loading a video in the multimedia regular block?
Thank you!

Hey Lisa đź‘‹
You’re not missing anything — at the moment, the custom blank block doesn’t support adding closed captions or transcript visibility the same way the multimedia block does.
When you add a video inside a custom block, it’s treated more like embedded content rather than a structured learning object, so the caption or “show transcript” option isn’t triggered there.
If you want learners to access captions, you’ve got a couple of practical workarounds:
- Upload your video in a multimedia block instead — that’s currently the only block type that supports uploading a caption file or transcript toggle.
- Or, if you must keep it in a custom block, you can manually embed subtitles by uploading a video that already includes them (via an .srt burned in), or use a YouTube/Vimeo embed with captions enabled.
Hopefully, future updates add the same transcript option for custom blocks — it would make accessibility much smoother.
I’ve run into the same limitation before and ended up using the multimedia block for that reason.
