Building a course that is navigable using Dragon (or similar)

Hi,

I work for a Public Sector organisation, and want to make my courses as accessible as possible. I have alt text and reading order sorted, but wanted to ensure that my courses were navigable by voice navigation using Dragon or something similar.

I really just need to know where Dragon takes it's name for the objects on the screen from. For instance, if there is an activity and the user has to select three objects, I want to be able to add in navigation prompts to the slide for instance 'voice navigation prompt - use raindrop 1, raindrop 2 etc'. Do I need to add alt text to the objects, or does Dragon read the object title that's displayed on the timeline?

Or am I overthinking this, and Dragon makes it clear to the user what the object is called and so what they need to say to select it?

thanks!

  • Dragon usually works with 'say what you see'. So if the user says the label name, Dragon will select it. However, there are currently some problems with this in Rise and Storyline. In Storyline, Dragon works in the player but not with objects on the slide. The only way to interact with the slide is to use keyboard commands: tab, tab, press enter, etc. With Rise, Dragon used to work really well, but following a code change to Rise (approx April 2025), Dragon now doesn't work very well with radio buttons, checkboxes and other inputs.

I have reported this to Articulate but they don't seem to realise how problematic it is. They keep telling me that Dragon isn't one of their supported screen readers. This just shows their poor understanding, as Dragon isn't a screen reader at all. They don't seem to understand the concept of voice recognition software and think accessibility is just about screen readers.

We are going to start a pilot with a group of users to use Windows Voice Access instead of Dragon. This works better with Rise products... but really, Articulate should fix the code.

Hi Nicki, Thanks so much for your reply (I'd completely forgotten I'd asked this!)

Hopefully Articulate will fix the code, in the meantime I'll make sure to add labels to everything in the hope that the courses can be accessed in the future.
