Can I create closed captions on a project with only audio added, no video?
Hi all,
Just reading the release notes etc on the new features in the 29 August 2017 release, and noticed details about closed captions in Articulate Storyline 360.
I have a project with audio on each slide, with no video media. When i view Audio Tools Options, it advises there are no captions which is correct, but when i click the little "+" icon, it takes me straight to an explorer to find and upload captions.
2 questions:
1 - Can I create my own captions on a project with audio only, no video? If so, how?
2 - If i need to create closed caption files separately, are there any recommended third party web pages that offer this?
Thank you so much!
kindly,
Stevi
Hi everyone,
I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 86, we’ve included important fixes and new features.
One of the new features we’ve included:
- Position captions at the top or bottom of the slide to ensure closed caption visibility and prevent the obstruction of critical course content.
Launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer to take advantage of this update, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You’ll find our step-by-step instructions here.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hey Stevi-lee,
I too am going through the same issue. When I click on the add captions icon for an audio file, it doesn't give me the ability to edit captions.
Hi Stevi and Design Team,
You should see the option to add your own captions to Audio files on the Audio Tools Options tab:
Let's double check that you're on the latest update:
- Click the Help tab
- Click About Storyline
- Look for v3.8.13087.0 in the bottom-right corner
If you find you need to update your software, follow these steps!

The process for adding CC to audio files is the same as for vids. See here the third example for audio with CC.

I understand that. When I click on that option it's giving me the loading screen which kept going on for a long time. Can anyone try just using an audio mp3 or WAV and subtitle it. All I see online is video.
Hi Design Team! Take a Peek at this quick video I put together for you. Let me know if you're not seeing the same options that I have!

Thanks Alyssa for that video. However, the issue that I am experiencing is that when I click on the audio and go to add captions option. I get the loading screen (see screencast for more details).
Any help in this matter is appreciated.
Thanks, that video is really helpful. I'm going to share this with our Support Engineers so we can get you sorted out as soon as possible. Be on the lookout for an email from Support@Articulate.com!

Hey Alyssa,
Thanks for your reply, but wanted to let you know that I haven't received any response from support. Is this issue still being dealt with?
Hi Design Team! I see my colleague Eloisa sent you an email today with these troubleshooting steps. Please let me know if you don't see an email from her, and we'll resend it!

Hey Alyssa,
Sorry I don't think I received an email from Eloisa. Could you resend it? Thanks
