ELC 321 - Using Drag and Drop Activities in eLearning - Mass Casualty Incident Response

This week's eLearning Challenge was to create a new drag and drop activity.

I used this as an opportunity to teach about the 5-S process that a non-medical responder should use if they find themselves as the first responder to a mass casualty event.

This lesson teaches about triage and gives the learner an opportunity to make assessments in a real-time scenario.

Assistance is provided via pop-up graphic for those who need it.

There is also a doctor available via "phone" for advice when learner needs extra help via drag and drop.

How it was built

The opening scene is actually a GIF of 4 photos created in PowerPoint.

The drag and drop scene uses markers in storyline to represent the various victims of the MCI.  When clicked on the marker provides a brief description of the victims state including their respirations, perfusion, and mental state (RPMS).

The states of the markers were purposely set to not change when the user drops the marker on one of the four targets, instead, the submit button does not appear until all of the markers have been successfully placed.

The markers can also be dropped on the ADVICE icon and a audio prompt will give advice based on the RPM criteria.

In this example, kristen_home is a motion path with a distance of zero (0) and a duration of .10.  This motion path was created while the marker "kristen" was in her starting position.  That way, when the user drops "kristen" on advice, the advice audio plays, but the marker "kristen" just goes back where she started.

Adding realism

To add realism to the experience we use sound and visual effects.

An explosion sound sets the scene when the learner first enters the scenario.

Once the learner begins triage, a heartbeat sound and a timer advance every one second.

To achieve the one second timer effect, a block is being animated offscreen using Storylines motion paths.  A motion path with a duration of one second moves a block.

When the animation completes, the variable "timer" is incremented by one and the animation begins again.

Also when the animation completes the "heartbeat" sound effect is played.
