I've performed word counts by exporting a translation file to MS Word.
However, it does require a bit more effort than just exporting and looking at the count. You need to delete all the duplicated text (e.g., the same text in different states), possibly optional text (e.g., glossary), and the ID info.
Do that, and the count that MS Word provides should be close enough.
